Tim Biebel ‘01 ~ VP of New Business

During the summer of 2009, Paul and Tim Biebel (MVCS class of 2001) started a new company called “Prudent Living.” As the construction industry moves toward the future it is apparent that there is a need to incorporate renewable technologies and energy efficiency into new and existing building structures. Prudent Living combines its diagnostic skills with 35 years of Biebel Builders design/build experience and the added advantage of having its own in-house electricians. We are a complete “one-stop shop.”

The renewable energy services we offer include Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar hot water systems,   geothermal heating & cooling systems, and wind turbines. Prudent Living is commercially certified by the “Building Performance Institute” and is fully qualified to perform comprehensive building analyses using a winning combination of thermal imaging, blower door testing and indoor air quality monitoring of all combustion appliances. Spending a few dollars for an in-depth analysis of your home is a great investment into a healthy living environment and prevention of unnecessary waste of energy. If you want to know more about Prudent Living, please visit our website:  www.prudentliving.com

Kryik Weidman ‘07

Kyrik is a National Hispanic Scholar and a Junior mechanical engineering student at University of Nebraska at Lincoln. His international experiences include study abroad trips to Spain and Brazil. While in Brazil for seven months, Weidman studied Portuguese and attended engineering classes at the University of Ceará. In 2009 Kyrik was a summer intern for Omaha Public Power District.

Kyrik, along with 7 other UNL students, was selected to be part of the fourth team that UNL will send to NASA’s prestigious Microgravity Univeristy sponsored by the NASA Nebraska Space Grant. The UNL team, nicknamed “Red Moon” will study cryocooler validation for the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR) VF-200 for use with the International Space Station starting in 2012-13. Cryocooling is required to keep the High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnet assemblies at or below 40 degrees Kelvin, or 40 degrees above absolute zero, for the VF-200’s plasma exhaust technologies at Low Earth Orbit. UNL students will test the cryocooling in super-gravity (1.8g) and microgravity (<0.1g) conditions.

Microgravity University missions fly on NASA’s specially-equipped aircraft with parabolic maneuvers on 1.5-hour flights over the Gulf of Mexico to simulate varying conditions of gravity. For more information, visit the team’s website at: http://engineering.unl.edu/current-students/microgravity/.
